Power bike touring gadgets with a pedal powered generator: Siva Cycle Atom Generator

For quite a while now Maggie and I have been looking for ways to power our bike gadgets and technology while we are touring. We will have a computer and phones so we can check in with friends and family along the way, and more importantly, we will have cameras to document our adventure and our journey. We decided early on that we definitely need some way to charge our devices on our bike tour, or our mothers would most likely have the Coast Guard out looking for us every time we don’t check in for a day. My worst nightmare would be sitting at a bar enjoying a margarita and see our mothers tromping towards us, fumes arising, because they flew down to Panama to find out where we were.

Recently we came across a new bike generator design by Siva Cycle called the Atom. It is a new style of cycle touring generator that attaches to the hub of your wheel rather than resting against the wheel wall. Traditional generators can cause wear and tear on the wheel wall and add quite a bit of resistance to the pedaling. The Atom bike generator is supposed to only add the effect of a 0.3% grade to ride resistance and charge any USB device as fast as a wall plug can. Here is a little about the Atom in Siva Cycle’s own words:

The Atom is specifically designed to output a high quality, USB compatible 5V @ up to 1000mA. In English, that means that if your device can be charged with a USB connection (iPhones, and iPods, Galaxy phones, GPS trackers, etc.), then it will take a charge from the Atom. The 1000mA charge rate is the same as if you were plugged into the wall, which means your device will go from fully flat to fully charged, just as fast on the bike as it would sitting on your desk.

We worked hard to keep the Atom low profile. Weighing in at only 300 grams, it is 7.5” tall, 3.0” wide, and 1.2” deep, including all component parts. We like to think of it as a beefy iPhone.

Integrated seamlessly into the body is a 1650mAh battery pack (compare vs. iPhone 5’s 1440mAh) that charges wherever you go. This means a over 100% charge on your iPhone 5 from dead flat, anywhere you need it. Your bike just got powerful…and so did your pocket.

The Siva Cycle Atom generator came out of a Kickstarter project and is still in the final stages of development and production. The product doesn’t actually ship until later this summer, but we are very excited about the possibility of using a cool new device to help power our ability to communicate with our families and the people who read our blog!

If anyone knows about any other options we should also consider, we are always open to suggestions!

Very excited for a new, cutting edge gizmo. Hope it works!
Oh, and that would NOT be your worst nightmare, sweetie. Not by a long shot. If we moms came traipsing into a bar in Panama, you guys would be so dang excited to see us it would be hilarious. Tough guy…..
